A Bit About Me

Cedric Herring is Professor and Director of the Language, Literacy, and Culture PhD Program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and former Professor of Sociology and Public Policy at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He was also the Founding Director of the Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy at the University of Illinois at Chicago and former Interim Head of the Department of Sociology at UIC. Dr. Herring is former President of the Association of Black Sociologists. He publishes on topics such as race and public policy, stratification and inequality, workplace diversity, and jobs and economic development. He has published eight books and more than 75 scholarly articles and chapters. His most recent book (coauthored with Loren Henderson) is entitled Diversity in Organizations: A Critical Examination (Routledge, 2015). He has received support for his research from the National Science Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, the Joyce Foundation, and others. In addition, he has shared his findings in community forums, in newspapers and magazines, on radio and television, before government officials, and at the United Nations.
